How to reset a garbage disposal

A quick safety-first check for a garbage disposal that stopped working.

Before you start

Turn the disposal switch off and keep your hands out of the drain opening.

1. Look under the disposal for a small red or black reset button.
2. Press the button firmly once.
3. Run cold water, then turn the disposal on briefly.
4. If it hums, leaks, or trips again, stop and investigate before continuing.
